His work combines beautiful fashion imagery with the sensitive raw illustration of his homeland India. The international response to his work has been outstanding. Shan has worked with an impressive roster of brands and publishers like Alexander McQueen, American Vogue, i-D and the British Journal of Photography among many others.
Considering all his achievements, it is surprising to discover that Ashish has had no formal training. After leaving his childhood town of Dehradun in his 20s, he met a group of friends who were in the habit of playing around with cameras. Picking one up himself, he began taking photographs.
Today he has developed a new aesthetic vocabulary for fashion imagery in India. Through his practice he has broken away from the conception that fashion is only for a specific class of people. This is something he focuses on in every aspect of his work – from the casting of his subjects, to the environment they are shot in and the creatives he collaborates with.
